Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of the changes to the intersection?
The main reason for these updates is safety. In Delta’s Vision Zero strategy, developed with extensive input from residents, 56 St and 16 Ave was identified as an area in need of improvement.
Serious incidents have occurred here in the past, and it is a priority to ensure that all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, can use this intersection safely.
As a result of changes to the curbs, you may have noticed that turns through the intersection are slowed down. This is an intended effect, as slower turning speeds support our goal of reducing serious injuries and fatalities.
What are you doing to keep traffic moving smoothly?
To help keep traffic moving while retaining the safety benefits, we are:
- Extending turn signal timing to give vehicles more time to clear the intersection
- Updating pavement markings to clearly delineate lanes and stopping points to improve traffic flow
- Slightly adjusting bus stop locations to make sure busses can safely load and unload
Why is there so much heavy truck traffic through this intersection?
We recognize that heavy truck traffic through this intersection is a concern. We are coordinating with developers to improve traffic flow at 56 Street and 16 Avenue.
Did you gather public feedback before making these changes?
Delta’s Vision Zero Strategy was developed with significant public feedback, at which time 56 Avenue and 16 Street was identified as an intersection where serious incidents have occurred. This revealed the need for safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, prompting the safety upgrades installed as part of the project.
We've also received a lot of feedback from the community since work began, and recognize that changes like these work best when residents and businesses are part of the conversation early. We are committing to more consultation going forward on decisions that affect how people get around, whether by car, bike, or foot.
What about transit?
We are working with Coast Mountain Bus Company to make sure transit service through the area isn't affected by these intersection upgrades. Some minor changes to the bus stop may be required, and we will share details as those plans are confirmed.
Additional Work on 56 Street
In addition to the above City of Delta projects, work is also taking place at 56 Street and 14B Avenue for the Clara House Development. Construction is projected to be completed in mid-2027 and will result in periodic single-lane closures on 56 Street, in front of the development site. Any closures will take place between 9 am and 3 pm and traffic control will be in place.
Summary of Completed Work
1. 56 Street Sanitary Upgrades (18 Avenue to 12 Avenue)
Crews have replaced the sanitary sewer south along 56 Street from 18 Avenue to 12 Avenue, as well as a sanitary main along 56 Street and View Crescent. These updates provide increased capacity for the future and improve long-term system performance and reliability. The former sanitary main has been decommissioned, and all construction activities associated with this project are now complete.
2. 56 Street Multi-Use Pathway (6 Avenue to 8A Avenue)
Construction of the new multi-use pathway (MUP) along 56 Street is now complete. Crews continue to work on the MUP extension along 8A Avenue and 55A Street, further expanding active transportation connections in the area.
3. 56 Street Fibre-Optics
To improve digital services, public wi-fi, and traffic management, fibre optic installation took place along 56 Street (east side from 19 Avenue to 10 Avenue) and 12 Avenue (south side from 56 Street to 53A Street), connecting the future Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre, the nearby field house, Tsawwassen Arts Centre, Fire Hall Number Two, and numerous intersections.
