The City of Delta is excited to announce the return of the popular Planting Our Roots – Free Tree Project for 2025. This initiative, now in its second year, provides hundreds of residents with free trees to enhance Delta’s urban canopy, improve air quality, and support local biodiversity.
Delta residents are invited to enter the draw for a free tree and recipients will be randomly selected to receive one of ten species, pending availability, all well-suited to Delta’s climate and growing conditions.
"Planting Our Roots was a huge success in its first year, and we’re thrilled to bring it back for 2025,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “This program has been well-received by the community, and it’s exciting to see so many residents eager to take part. Whether you’re looking to add shade to your yard or contribute to our urban canopy, this is a fantastic opportunity to receive a free tree and be part of something that benefits the whole city.”
The ten tree species selected for 2025 include:
- EH Wilson Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin)
- Desert King Fig (Ficus carica)
- Pink Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata)
- Saratoga Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
- Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (Amelanchier)
- Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
- Samaritan Chinese Dogwood (Cornus kousa)
- Liberty Apple (Malus)
- Snowcone Japanese Snowbell (Styrax japonicus)
- Korean Evodia (Tetradium daniellii)
Registration will open from April 1-3, and 250 trees will be allocated for the spring season. Trees will be delivered by staff to selected participants’ homes, and all recipients will receive planting and care instructions to ensure their trees thrive.
