Sign Permits | City of Delta

Delta's Sign Bylaw establishes rules for the placement of signs on a property or building in Delta. This bylaw regulates the size, shape, height and location of signs.

What you need to know:

There are special sign areas for Ladner Village, Tsawwassen Town Centre, Scott Road and the Nordel Social Heart. Please refer to the distinct sign regulations that apply to these areas as outlined in the Sign Bylaw.
Comprehensive sign plans may be established for existing mixed-use, commercial or industrial developments. The plan is intended to coordinate all signs for a building, group of buildings or multi-tenant complexes. Where comprehensive sign plans have been approved, proposals for signage must comply with the established sign framework.
Certain types of signs are prohibited such as billboards and rotating signs, see Section 4.2 of the Sign Bylaw.
It is possible to apply for a Development Variance Permit to vary the sign bylaw.

A description of the types of signs is provided in the Delta's Sign Bylaw. The following signs are exempt from the regulations in the Bylaw:
- Signs with a total sign area less than 0.1 m²
- Signs located inside a building or concealed parking area which are not intended to be viewed from the street
- Street / traffic control signs
- Addresses affixed to a building
- Flags
- Signs with instructions related to services such as gas pumps, vending machines and telephones
- Vehicle signs if the vehicle is not stationary for more than 6 hours where visible to the street
The following signs are subject to Delta's Sign Bylaw but do not require a sign permit provided that the conditions in the Bylaw are met:
- Neighbourhood identification signs
- Community activity signs
- Directional signs
- Fascia identification signs
- Fascia directory signs
- Banner signs
- Home occupation signs
- Bed and breakfast signs
- Political signs
- Prohibition signs
- Real estate and open house signs
- Multi-unit residential identification signs
- Window signs
- Construction site signs
- Public convenience signs
- Park and public property identification signs
Once the signage has been installed, email your request for final inspection to the Application Centre at development@delta.ca with photos of all the erected signage, the Sign Permit number and property address.
Where a building permit is required to allow the proposed signage, building inspections will be completed as per typical building permit process for the structure, separate from the Sign Permit.
