Winners of “Mayor’s Garden Contest for Kids” Recognized

Mayor Lois E. Jackson recognized the winners of her 9th annual kids garden contest. Each winner was presented with a certificate in recognition of their garden submission photos, along with a Delta gift card for use at any of the City’s recreational facilities. The winning class under the School Classroom category will receive a $100 gift card to West Coast Seeds, a load of topsoil, a wheelbarrow and 20 small garden trowels. Congratulations to this year’s winners and to all the children who entered the contest!

City of Delta’s United Way Campaign Kicks-off

City staff co-chairs – Robert Low and Nick Angrignon – presented an overview of Delta’s annual United Way Staff Campaign, including this year’s schedule of events and fundraising goals. The City’s campaign will run from October 24th to November 2nd and will focus on Building Stronger Communities, with staff payroll pledges going directly towards community groups.


2019 Permissive Tax Exemptions Approved

Council gave final consideration and adoption to Bylaw No. 7796, which permits exemptions from 2019 municipal taxation for community service organizations’ land. View the staff report.


Enviro-Smart Organics – Agrologist Report Peer Review

Council received an update regarding the Green-for-Life Enviro-Smart Organics facility, in response to correspondence recently submitted by the facility. According to Enviro-Smart, the facility has met the minimum 1 % requirement of raw materials originating from the farm, in order to meet Delta’s Zoning Bylaw requirements. This response will be forwarded to Delta’s Agrologist for review. Delta also received a response from the Agricultural Land Commission, with regards to whether the Enviro-Smart Organics facility is in compliance with the Agricultural Land Reserve Use, Subdivision and Procedure Regulation. Summary of 2018 UBCM Convention Meetings

Council received a summary of the 2018 Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Convention meetings, attended by members of Council and staff from September 10-14, 2018. During the convention, Council members, accompanied by senior staff, attended 11 meetings to discuss a broad range of important topics with provincial ministries and associated staff. Delta Applying for First Nations Policing Program Funding for Additional TFN Officer

Council approved a City application submission for funding under Public Safety Canada’s First Nations Policing Program Funding for New Officers. The application is for a dedicated new officer to provide youth-focused policing services to Tsawwassen First Nation, at no cost to Delta. View the staff report.


Delta Extreme Weather Shelter Approved for 2018-2019 Season

Council approved supporting the Delta Extreme Weather Shelter for the upcoming 2018-2019 season, which runs from November 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019 and is located at Ladner United Church. Council also approved the purchase and installation of a washing machine and dryer to help the shelter and assist community volunteers in supporting Delta’s vulnerable population throughout the year. Delta to Initiate a Community Childcare Needs Assessment

Council approved the submission of an application for funding for the UBCM Community Childcare Planning Program, for the development of a Delta Childcare Needs Assessment. This program provides funding to engage in childcare planning activities in order to develop a community-based childcare space creation action plan for Delta. View the staff report.


Curling Club Cameras to be installed at South Delta Recreation Centre

Council approved a memorandum of understanding between the City and the Tunnel Town Curling Club for the provision of a closed circuit video camera system to televise curling at South Delta Recreation Centre. View the staff report.


Beach Grove Park Off-Leash Area to Undergo Updates

Council endorsed recommendations to alter the off-leash area boundary located in Beach Grove Park, through the installation of barriers and notification signage. These changes will assist in providing greater separation between the off-leash area and the playground at Beach Grove Park. View the staff report.
