Thanks for Giving Campaign
On Thursday, October 26, students from Delview Secondary School will be participating in the 25th Annual “Thanks for Giving” Food Drive. One day a year, hundreds of Delview students canvass the neighbourhoods of North Delta for non-perishable food items. Last year, over 16,000 items were collected, with the campaign bringing in over 300,000 items to local food banks over the last 24 years.
Please remember to register and participate in the annual Great British Columbia ShakeOut, taking place on Thursday, October 19 at 10:19 am. This event is an excellent opportunity to practice and review your earthquake preparedness plan, restock supplies, and secure your space in the event of an emergency. Learn more at ShakeOutBC.ca.
Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture is ready to help you get in the spirit for Halloween. Family Fright Fest returns on Thursday, October 19 at the North Delta Recreation Centre and on Wednesday, October 25 at the Ladner Community Centre. A series of Halloween Skate and Costume Parties will also be taking place at Delta’s recreation centres from October 25 – 29. Learn more about Delta’s Halloween Events at Delta.ca.
Also, please note that Delta’s Halloween Patrol will once again be providing extra eyes and ears in the community to ensure our facilities and parks are safe and secure. In addition, the lights at select sports fields will be left on overnight to help increase visibility and safety. Please report any suspicious activity to Delta Police at 604-946-4111. All emergencies should be reported to 911.
United Way Campaign Kick Off
Council received a presentation from Delta’s United Way committee co-chairs regarding the 2017 United Way Workplace Campaign.
George Massey Tunnel – Ensuring the Safety of First Responders
Council endorsed a recommendation by the City Manager’s Office to request a comprehensive review of the safety concerns in the George Massey Tunnel by the Provincial Government. The review would involve emergency first responders, including Delta Fire and Emergency Services and Delta Police. The Provincial government is being asked to take immediate steps to address any deficiencies that may compromise the health or safety of emergency responders attending to calls at the George Massey Tunnel. Reclassification to the City of Delta
Council received an update regarding Delta’s reclassification and name change to the City of Delta. Delta is proceeding with a phased implementation of its new name to avoid incurring unnecessary costs. Additional changes include the titles of two key public positions; from Chief Administrative Officer to City Manager, and Municipal Clerk to City Clerk. View the staff report.
Delta Library Plan
Council received the results of the public consultation for the draft library plan. The issue of programming elicited the most comments, with respondents generally satisfied with current programming but desiring expanded programs for children, youth, and seniors. Staff will review the draft library plan, in conjunction with library staff, and consider ways to incorporate the feedback received from the public into the library plan. The amended plan will be brought back for Council’s consideration in early 2018. View the staff report.
Gateway Transportation Collaboration Forum
Council approved Delta becoming contributing partner to the whistle cessation projects put forward as part of the Greater Vancouver Gateway 2030 Program. The contribution from Delta will be up to 5% for the five rail crossing locations in Delta. Other funding partners include Transport Canada, British Columbia Rail, and Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. View the staff report.
Rail Safety Improvement Program
Council approved the “Rail Safety Improvement Program Agreement for Grade Crossing Improvements Contribution” by which Transport Canada will provide funding for the River Road Bike Lane Improvement Project. The Agreement establishes terms and conditions for project cost-sharing between the Government of Canada and Delta. The goal is for the River Road Bike Lane Improvement Project to be completed by the spring of 2018. View the staff report.
