One Minute of Silence – Day of Mourning
At the beginning of the meeting, Delta Council observed one minute of silence in recognition of the National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured at the Workplace. On April 28, all flags will be lowered from dawn until dusk, as CUPE Local 454 holds a commemorative ceremony in Rotary Park at 10:45 am.
Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair
On Thursday, April 27, the Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair will be held at Sungod Recreation Centre. This annual event is meant to inspire and encourage people to turn their passions into careers. Delta has been hosting this annual event since 2013, with this year growing to include a new Job Fair for candidates to be interviewed by employers, as well as an exciting Boat Race competition, connecting grade 10, 11, and 12 students with marine industry professionals for a chance to win incredible prizes. 2017 Annual Tax Rate Bylaws
Council received a presentation from the Director of Finance and gave first, second, and third readings to the 2017 Annual Tax Rate Bylaws for Delta, the Greater Vancouver Regional District, and the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Area. The 2017 Financial Plan requires an overall tax increase of 2.75%, which includes 0.5% to maintain city government services, 0.25% for police services, 0.5% for the Drainage Program, and 1.5 % for an Emergency Operations Centre, Firehall and Training Facility at Boundary Bay Airport. This proposed increase is below the average increase for Metro Vancouver. View the staff report.
Deltaport Way/27B Ave. Pedestrian Overpass
Council received an update regarding Deltaport Way/27B Avenue Pedestrian Overpass. Council approved the recommendation to send a joint letter from Mayor Lois E. Jackson and Chief Bryce Williams, Tsawwassen First Nation, to the Port of Vancouver to confirm whether funding opportunities are available for the pedestrian overpass. The potential funding opportunity in question would be from the Container Capacity Improvement Program. A letter of request was sent to the Port on February 12, 2014, outlining the project scope and potential benefits. View the staff report.
