Whatcom County Decision re: Appeal on Radio Towers
Mayor Lois E. Jackson thanked the community for their steadfast commitment against the Point Roberts Radio Towers proposal. Last week, Whatcom County Council denied the conditional use permit for the relocation of BBC Broadcasting Inc. radio towers to Point Roberts.
Richmond, New Westminster, Vancouver and Surrey Fire Departments Support Delta Fire
Mayor Jackson recognized the fire departments from Richmond, New Westminster, Surrey and Vancouver, who generously supported Delta Fire & Emergency Services by providing coverage of Delta's seven fire halls and responding to emergency incidents, allowing Delta Fire's first line responders to honour Captain Mark Janson at his Celebration of Life. This is the first time in history that fire departments from across the region have united together to provide coverage for another municipality for such an occasion.
Mayor Jackson encouraged residents to celebrate Family Day in Delta by attending an Everyone Welcome skate at their local ice arena, or visit their local pool for a family swim. One Billion Rising Revolution Event – February 13
There is an international “One Billion Rising” campaign underway in an effort to end violence against women. February 13 is the official “One Billion Rising Day”, where people around the world will come together to express their objection to violence against women.
In recognition of “One Billion Rising”, the Delta Police Department, in partnership with the Network to End Violence in Relationships (NEVR), is holding an event in North Delta at the Firehall Centre for the Arts. Delta’s “One Billion Rising” event will start at 1:00pm and feature speakers and a reception where various organizations, including DPD Victim Services and DOVE, will have information booths. Representatives from various sporting organizations, Delta students and others will be in attendance to participate in this important campaign. Ladner Leisure Centre Grand Reopening & Celebration of Hockey Day in Canada – February 14
February 14th will mark the grand re-opening of the Ladner Leisure Centre and Hockey Day in Canada! Delta, in partnership with South Delta Minor Hockey, will hold hockey events throughout the day at Ladner Leisure Centre, along with a street hockey tournament at South Delta Recreation Centre, and 12 hours of hockey at Tilbury Ice, all in celebration of Hockey Day in Canada. The opening ceremonies will kick off at 8:45 am on February 14th at the Ladner Leisure Centre where we will celebrate Hockey Day in Canada, the re-opening of the Ladner Leisure Centre, and a tribute to the late Pat Quinn.
Recognition of Delta Athletes participating in the 2015 Canada Winter Games
Mayor Jackson and Council recognized the Delta athletes competing in this year’s Canada Winter Games. The following Delta athletes will be participating in the upcoming games scheduled from February 13 to March 1 in Prince George, BC:
Curling: Sarah Daniels, Skip, and her father, Ernie Daniels, coach
Gymnastics: Alex Farquharson
Hockey: Connor McDonald and Nick Watson
Judo: Tavis Jamieson
Wheelchair Basketball: Erin and Paula Higgins
Mayor Jackson also recognized Olympian, Joy Fera, who will be inducted into the Canada Games Hall of Honour at the upcoming 2015 Canada Winter Games. Congratulations to Joy and all the athletes!
BYLAWS FOR FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD READINGS
2015 Utility User Rates
Council gave first, second and third readings to Bylaw Nos. 5781, 5782 and 4273, which set the utility user rates for water, sewer and solid waste (garbage and recycling). The flat rate utility bill for a single family home is proposed to increase by $22 from $960 to $982 in 2015. Delta’s proposed 2015 utility user rates remain one of the lowest in the region. BYLAWS FOR FIRST AND SECOND READINGS AND REFERRAL TO PUBLIC HEARING
Council Defeats application for an Official Community Plan Amendment, Rezoning, DVP and Subdivision at 4585 and 4595 Garry Street
Council defeated the recommendations to give first and second readings to an Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw, Zoning Amendment Bylaw, and development variance permit to allow subdivision of the subject properties at 4585 and 4595 Garry Street into three residential lots and construction of a new single family dwelling and a one-storey coach house on each lot. Official Community Plan Amendment, Rezoning, Land Use Contract Discharge, DVP, DP and Subdivision at 6788 Corbould Road Reffered to Public Hearing
Council gave first and second readings to Bylaws No. 7390, 7391 and 7392, which would allow subdivision of the property at 6788 Corbould Road, the current location of the Boundary Bay Bayside Racquet Club, into two lots and construction of a new single family dwelling on each lot. This application will now be referred to a Public Hearing. View the staff report.
2014 Parks Vandalism Summary
Council received a report summarizing vandalism incidents in Delta’s parks and costs incurred in 2014. There were 254 reported acts of vandalism in Delta’s parks in 2014, approximately 20 fewer incidents than 2013. The total cost of park vandalism for 2014 was $34,550, which is approximately $30,000 less than 2013. The decrease in incidents is attributed to Delta’s washroom security locking systems, Park Attendants and Parks Patrol. View the staff report.
Hellings Elementary Community Initiated Cost Sharing Projects
Council approved a contribution of $26,582 that will go towards funding the addition of new intermediate aged playground equipment at Hellings Elementary School, as part of a Community Cost Sharing Project with Hellings Elementary and the Parent Advisory Committee. View the staff report.
Metro Vancouver Transportation & Transit Referendum
Council approved the inclusion of a letter with the 2015 Flat Rate Utility Notices. The letter will provide information and request feedback on the upcoming Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Referendum. Staff will report back to Council on the feedback received from Delta residents and businesses at the March 30, 2015 Regular Meeting. View the staff report
