Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton steps down from Municipal Council

Jun 06, 2014

Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton stepped down today from his long-time role as Delta Councillor, a position he has held since being first elected in 2002. He will continue to work for the community in his role as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

“On behalf of Council and the entire community, I thank MLA Scott Hamilton for his selfless and dedicated service to Delta,” said Mayor Lois E. Jackson. “Although we are losing a valued member of Council, I am so pleased Mr. Hamilton will continue to serve our community in his role as MLA for Delta North; providing a vital link between Delta and the Provincial government.”

“I can’t thank my fellow Councillors enough for their support and encouragement over the years,” MLA Hamilton said. “Mayor Jackson has been a friend and a mentor since I was first elected to Council. I look forward to continuing to work together for the betterment of all Delta residents.”

Councillor Hamilton has been at the forefront of several community projects and initiatives over his four terms on Council. These include recreation facility upgrades and the addition of synthetic turf fields in his role as vice-chair of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Commission. In addition, Councillor Hamilton chaired the Housing Task Force, with the goal of providing a diverse range of affordable housing to meet the demands of a changing population. The Housing Task Force released several recommendations which were adopted by Council in 2010 and led to the legalization of secondary suites in single family dwellings.

MLA Hamilton was elected in May 2013 as a member of the majority B.C. Liberal government. Following his election, he was asked by Delta Council to retain his Council seat to avoid a costly by-election so close to the 2014 municipal election and to assist Council by ensuring a quorum was available when needed. MLA Hamilton agreed, waiving his right to compensation as a Councillor during this period.
