Heritage BC Recognizes Delta for Heritage Hangar Restoration Project at Boundary Bay Airport

Feb 20, 2019

As part of Heritage Week celebrations, today Heritage BC announced the City of Delta as a recipient of a Recognition Award in the area of Heritage Conservation, for the Heritage Hangar Restoration Project at Boundary Bay Airport.

The restoration project involved replacing the entire roof, multiple structural columns, and windows on the main doors of the Heritage Hangar. The main doors were also repainted and the mechanism to open and close the doors was refurbished. The project was made possible by the strategic sale of land at Boundary Bay Airport, which allowed the approximately $2 million project to be completed without impacting City taxpayers. Since the Heritage Hangar is actively used for aircraft storage, this restoration was important to preserve the heritage structure as well as for the continued economic success of Boundary Bay Airport.

“This project is a great example of Delta’s efforts to protect our community’s heritage in general and the rich history of Boundary Bay Airport and the Heritage Hangar in particular,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “I am proud of our efforts to spend the necessary time and money on this restoration to preserve a structure that is important not only in terms of the history of Boundary Bay Airport, but also for the present and future economic success of the Airport.”

Built in 1944, the Heritage Hangar is a rare surviving example of an aircraft hangar design from WWII and a symbol of Canada’s wartime experience. During WWII, Boundary Bay Airport was a key military training base for more than 5,000 students who were trained on aircraft such as Kittyhawk, Mitchell, and Liberator. The Hangar’s distinctive bow-arched roof, as well as the structure’s significant size, make it a highly visible landmark for the community.

Heritage BC will host an awards ceremony on May 10, 2019, where Delta’s efforts to restore the Heritage Hangar at Boundary Bay Airport will be officially recognized.
