Mayor Lois E. Jackson recognized Councillor Ian L. Paton, for his service as a member of Delta Council since he was first elected in the 2010 by-election. Councillor Paton officially resigns from Council on July 1, 2018 to focus on his role as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Delta-South.
Council received an update from Tourism Delta regarding the organization’s 2017 financial statements, accomplishments, along with future strategies under consideration. Tourism Delta is a volunteer society established to promote Delta to visitors and residents alike. Learn more.
Council approved a grant request in the amount of $15,000 to the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust. The grant will support programs for farmland winter waterfowl feeding habitat and help protect soil from the effects of intense winter rains. View the staff report.
Council endorsed a request to schedule a meeting with key government and industry stakeholders. The purpose of the meeting is to develop a strategy to better engage the provincial and federal governments, regarding the need for dedicated funding to dredge the local river channels of the Fraser River. Delta continues to advocate for long-term provincial water lot leases, since most of the current leases are limited to two years, providing a lack of certainty for residents, businesses and developers. Council gave three readings to a new Delta Smoking Regulation Bylaw and associated amendments to the Bylaw Notice Enforcement Bylaw and the Municipal Ticketing Information Bylaw. These bylaw updates seek to address issues surrounding the existing Delta Smoking Regulation Bylaw, including enhanced and clarified smoking restrictions, while also addressing the issue of cannabis smoking in light of the impending legalization. Council endorsed several staff recommendations to address dike improvement strategies for the River Road West corridor of Ladner. This is in response to the Provincial government’s 2018 Flood Hazard Management Land Use Guidelines, which addresses how flood protection should account for future sea level rise. Council received an overview of Delta’s annual report covering the City’s 2017 financial records and achievements, along with key goals and objectives for 2018. A report summarizing each member of Council’s remuneration and expenses for 2017 was also presented. View the staff report.
