Happy Birthday #DeltaBC!
Nov 10, 2014
Incorporated in 1879, the Corporation of Delta turns 135 today!
A Brief History
In 1858, the Fraser River Gold Rush and the creation of the Colony of British Columbia attracted settlers to the land.
Early settlers included the Ladner brothers who, on their way to the gold fields, saw potential for agriculture in the rich soils of the Fraser River delta and returned in 1868 to claim land at the head of Chilukthan Slough in present-day Ladner.
Farming and fishing became the economic foundations of Delta, and in 1873, James Deas established a salmon cannery at present-day Deas Island.
As the economy and population grew, incorporation was granted to the Corporation of Delta in 1879, and its three unique communities of Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta continue to thrive today.
