City Recognizes Heritage Commission Scholarship Winner

Council presented the 2019 Heritage Commission Scholarship to Stuart Yahn, a recent South Delta Secondary School graduate. Stuart was awarded $1,000 towards post-secondary education for his presentation on the history of shipbuilding in Delta. Stuart’s interest in shipbuilding was inspired by his father and together they have visited many shipyards throughout British Columbia.



Delta’s Birds and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy

Council received an update on Delta’s Birds and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy. The strategy aims to identify, protect, promote, enhance, and monitor the biodiversity of Delta's globally significant bird population within urban, agricultural, industrial, and natural habitats. Council approved the recommendation that staff move forward with implementing the next steps of the strategy, including forming an information sharing group and “Birds Love Delta” campaign to increase bird awareness in Delta. New Community Care Facility in Delta

Council approved the development permit for a new community care facility located on Central Avenue in Ladner. The permit will allow construction of a new 74 bed community care facility, which will replace the existing 55 bed community care facility that is currently being operated on the site. The existing facility was built in 1972 and requires upgrades to meet the changing needs of today’s senior citizens. View the staff report.


Support for the Dutch Liberation Canadian Society

Council received a presentation from the Dutch Liberation Canadian Society regarding the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. The society partners with local organizations to honour Canadian soldiers, sailors, and airmen through various community events and activities. Council requested that staff report back with suggestions for ways that the City can support the society’s anniversary event. View the presentation.
