Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers Presentation Ceremony for Mr. William Lloyd Jones
Aug 14, 2018
William Lloyd Jones, a Second World War veteran and long-time Delta resident and volunteer has been honoured with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.
Mayor Lois E. Jackson had the pleasure of hosting the Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, as she presented the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers to Mr. William Lloyd Jones. The medal is being presented on behalf of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada.
“Delta is a better place because Mr. William Lloyd Jones has chosen to live here. In my experience, Mr. Jones is a gentleman who has dedicated his life to the service of his country and enriching our community,” remarked Mayor Jackson. “He comes from a generation that is a testament to volunteerism, selflessness, and bravery and I hope his achievements inspire and guide future generations.”
An official Canadian honour, the Sovereign’s Medal recognizes living Canadians who have made a significant, sustained, and unpaid contribution to their community in Canada and abroad. Canadians honoured with this recognition come from across the country in a wide range of fields and an array of backgrounds.
William Lloyd Jones, or “Lloyd” as he is better known by many in Delta, volunteers tirelessly at the Delta Hospital, has spent over 25 years volunteering with the Delta Police Department, and is a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion where he assists veterans and their families. Locally, Mr. Jones is best known for his efforts in the success of the Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign.
Mr. Jones is a veteran of the Second World War, landing on Juno Beach shortly after D-Day. He was a member of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada that fought through the Battle of Normandy and participated in the liberation of France.
Jones is also the recipient of the Legion of Honour medal given to veterans that participated in D-Day operations — France’s highest honour.
