SDSS Student Awarded Delta Heritage Scholarship

Mayor Lois E. Jackson awarded Aiden Bennett of South Delta Secondary School with a $1,000 Heritage Commission Scholarship for his submission on the Vancouver Wireless Station, located in east Ladner. View the news release.


Summer Fish Sales at Elliott Street Wharf

Council approved the sale of fresh fish from vessels at Ladner’s Elliot Street Wharf. Sales will be permitted between 8am and 5pm seven days a week from August 9 to September 30, 2018. View the staff memo.


Proposed Gateway Casino Application Approved

Council gave final consideration and adoption to Bylaw No. 7761 to rezone a portion of the site located at 6005 Highway 17A, to permit construction of an entertainment complex with a casino, hotel, restaurants and meeting facilities. Holly Park Turf Field to be Replaced Next Year

Council approved a contract for consulting services to replace Holly Park’s synthetic turf field, which opened in 2005. The initial lifecycle for synthetic turf fields is between 10 and 15 years. Design is now set to begin with replacement scheduled for 2019. View the staff report.


New Electronic Message Board Approved for North Delta Recreation Centre

A contract for the supply and installation of a new electronic message board along 84 Avenue was approved. The sign will be located directly in front of the North Delta Recreation Centre and the soon to be completed North Delta Arts Centre. Library Enhancements Underway

Council awarded a contract to replace aging furniture and equipment in Delta’s libraries. These upgrades reflect the feedback received earlier this year during the public consultation process for Delta’s Library Plan. View the staff report.


Update on Highway 91/17 & Deltaport Way Upgrade Project

An update on the status of the Highway 91/17 and Deltaport Way Upgrade Project was received by Council. This project includes new interchange structures and the construction of approximately 15 kilometres of highway, to alleviate traffic congestion. An open house was recently held by provincial staff for community input. Site investigation and pre-load is expected to start this summer, with project completion scheduled for 2023. Vancouver Fraser Port Authority – Update on Projects in Delta

Council received an update on various Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) projects including, Roberts Bank Terminal 2, Emergency Access to Fraser Surrey Port Lands, a Deltaport Truck Staging Facility, Deltaport Shore Power, and the ECHO program. Staff meet regularly with the VFPA to discuss port-related issues impacting Delta. For an update on these projects, view the staff report.


Delta Seeking Assurances re: Proposed Billiton Potash Terminal

Council endorsed several follow-up action items related to BHP Billiton’s proposed potash terminal at Fraser Surrey Docks. The proposed terminal is located in the City of Surrey and abuts with the City of Delta’s boundary, raising concerns related to emergency access, and cumulative environmental and community impacts (i.e. traffic, air quality, noise). Delta is requesting that the Port of Vancouver conduct a cumulative effects assessment of community and environmental impacts associated with the proposed terminal. View the staff report.


Update on the Legalization of Non-Medical Cannabis

Council received an update regarding the provincial government’s recent announcement on changes that impact local government control over cannabis production in the Agricultural Land Reserve, along with other legislative items related to legalization. A City staff working-group meets regularly to address these and other emerging issues related to the legalization of non-medical cannabis to ensure Delta is well-situated to respond to these regulatory changes.
