Delta Welcomes International Ornithological Congress and Vancouver International Bird Festival
Jul 25, 2018
This August, bird-enthusiasts and nature lovers flock towards Metro Vancouver for two high-profile events that celebrate our feathered friends.
Leading up to the Vancouver International Bird Festival and the 27th International Ornithological Congress, Delta will be highlighting initiatives, organizations, and information that make our community a hotspot for birds. With up to five million birds and over 275 species using our community as a stopover along the Pacific Flyway, Delta provides the most significant migratory waterfowl and shorebird habitat on Canada’s Pacific Coast.
Delta boasts a variety of designations when it comes to supporting wildlife. The Fraser River Estuary is recognized as Canada’s top Important Bird Area and was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International importance in accordance with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2012. Delta has some unique opportunities and responsibilities for preserving the natural lands on which wildlife resides. Through the Birds and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, released earlier in 2018, Delta established a vision to protect, conserve and enhance our globally significant bird populations and unique biodiversity for future generations.
Over the course of the next few weeks, Delta will be promoting the many types of birds that spend time in our community as part of our daily #BirdsofDelta social media campaign. Each day will feature interesting details and a photograph with the intention of inspiring residents to take an interest in exploring our unique natural environment through bird-watching.
Delta will also give you a chance to try out your bird-watching with your whole family through the #BirdsofDelta photo contest. Take a photo of a bird in Delta and post it on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram with the hashtag #BirdsofDelta to be entered into a draw to win one of five annual family passes to the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Contest closes Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 11:59 pm.
