MAYOR’S ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Canada Summer Games

Mayor Lois E. Jackson extended best wishes to the Delta athletes competing at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg from July 26 to August 13. Representing Delta will be: 

  • Michael Aono – Athletics
  • Harbans Gill – Wrestling
  • Aidan McDonough & Thomas Kranjc – Swimming
  • Michael Milic – Triathlon
  • Mary Parsons – Golf
  • Brynn Pasin & Teo Ardanaz – Volleyball
  • Keeley Ainge, Damara Begin & Clint Taylor – Softball
  • Jacob Willemsen – Basketball
  • Gord Collings, Softball Manager; and
  • Eron Main – Mission Staff

Mayor Jackson and Delta Council congratulated these athletes and coaches for their accomplishments thus far, and are eager to recognize their achievements when they return home. 

Tsawwassen Sun Festival

The 45th anniversary of the Tsawwassen Sun Festival is taking place at Winskill Park from August 5 to 7. The Tsawwassen Sun Fest features a wide variety of activities for friends and family of all ages, including the Classic Car Show and Shine, the Antique Fair, food trucks, Sun Fest Drive-In Movie Night, a variety of sports tournaments, the Rotary Parade, and much more. Mayor’s Garden Contest for Kids

Mayor Jackson’s Garden Contest for Kids returns on August 4! Children between the ages of 5 and 16 are encouraged to get active this summer by heading outside and learning how to garden. To enter the contest, simply submit a photo along with the Contest Entry Form through email or by dropping it off at either the Municipal Hall or any of Delta’s Recreation Centre Customer Service Offices. ITEMS ARISING FROM IN-CAMERA MEETINGS

Canadian Lifeboat Institution Inc. Service Agreement

Council approved the service agreement between the Corporation of Delta and the Canadian Lifeboat Institution Inc. to provide moorage and other services at Ladner Harbour. The Canadian Lifeboat Institution Inc. is able to provide secondary marine search and rescue capabilities, as well as marine escort and protection services in the coastal waters surrounding Richmond, Delta, and Vancouver, including the Fraser River and Strait of Georgia. In exchange for receiving moorage, the Canadian Lifeboat Institution Inc. will provide patrol support to the local fishing and pleasure craft community. View the staff report

‘We Need a Bridge’ Expenditures to July 19, 2017

Council approved the report from Chief Administrative Officer George V. Harvie regarding the “We Need a Bridge” Communications Strategy Expenditures and approved a budget limit of $35,000 for the strategy. View the Council Resolutions. 

DISCUSSION REPORTS 

Delta Child & Youth Committee Annual Report

Council received the Delta Child and Youth Committee Annual Report, which highlights the 2016 accomplishments with respect to the 2014-2019 strategic goals and work plan. The goals of the Committee include the provision of effective, coherent, comprehensive and coordinated services with barrier-free access to these services for Delta’s children, youth, and families. Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust Request for Continued Funding

Council approved the continued funding of the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, with $15,000 provided by the existing Delta Wildlife Forage Fund for the 2017/2018 fiscal year. Council also received a report summarizing the 2016/2017 activities of the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. The funding will support the cost of winter cover crop establishment and the planting of new grassland set-asides for the next fiscal year. A portion of the funding will also be used for further research, coordination, and monitoring of the two programs, as well as reporting of the results. View the staff report
