On Saturday, July 1 the Corporation of Delta will be celebrating Canada Day with festivities throughout the community. Starting at 10:00 am at Diefenbaker Park, the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club will be hosting its 25th Annual Canada Day Celebration with the official Canada 150 ceremony starting at 1:00 pm. Between 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm, head to Kirkland House in Ladner for a performance by the Delta Police Pipe band, a family picnic, and children’s activities. Finish the evening with barbeque and fireworks at Chalmers Park in North Delta. Festivities begin at 5:30 pm with plenty of children’s activities and live music. New Adventure Playgrounds
On Monday, July 3, Delta is opening two brand new Adventure Playgrounds. These free drop-in playgrounds provide a unique space for children to engage in unstructured play by providing them with tools and materials to build their own play space. The new playgrounds are located at the North Delta Recreation Centre and South Delta Recreation Centre, and are open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm throughout the summer, until September 3. Tour de Delta
The Tour de Delta returns from July 7 to July 9, with races taking place throughout the community. On Friday, July 7, the MK Delta Criterium commences in North Delta’s Social Heart Area, with the Ladner Criterium taking place in Ladner Village on July 8, and the White Spot Delta UCI 1.2 Road Race winding through Tsawwassen on July 9. There are more than just the races to look forward to as community festivities will also be held during the races. Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship
Mayor Lois E. Jackson presented the 2017 Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship to Senja Lieuwen of Delta Secondary School. Senja submitted a book she created documenting Kirkland House and her family’s connection to it over the years. The book features several historic photos, some from her family’s collection, along with fascinating anecdotes. Senja is graduating from Delta Secondary School and is an active member of the community by playing soccer with the SurDel Girls Soccer U18 Silver team, performing in musical productions, participating in student government, as well as volunteering at Kin Village and Delta Community Centres. In September, she will begin her studies at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus. Congratulations Senja!

2017 Annual Report
Council received a presentation from the Director of Finance regarding the 2017 Annual Report. The Annual Report includes all reporting requirements for municipalities under the Community Charter, as well as departmental highlights, goals and objectives. Update: Delta Newcomers & Refugees
Council received an update regarding refugee families living in Delta, along with projected numbers anticipated to arrive in 2017 and the status of current services available to them. Between November 4, 2015 and December 31, 2016, 105 Syrian refugees were settled in Delta. During that time, newcomers also arrived from Iraq, Congo, Somalia, Sudan and Afghanistan. In 2017, approximately 720 new immigrants are projected to come to Metro Vancouver, many of whom will arrive in Delta. Knowledge about services available to these families is primarily provided by the Delta School District, with support available by agencies in Surrey and Richmond. View the staff report.
