Emergency Medical Responder Program Review
Jun 12, 2017
In June 2015, Delta implemented the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Program, which trained and licensed Delta firefighters to administer an enhanced level of emergency medical care to patients until the ambulance arrives. The goal of the program is to provide fast, more effective pre-hospital care to Delta residents, and to achieve this using existing resources.
Dr. Martha Dow, an Associate Professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, was commissioned to review the Emergency Medical Responder Program data from June 15, 2015 to September 12, 2016, and provide independent feedback on the outcomes of the program. These are some of the highlights from Dr. Dow's report:
This heightened level of patient care provided by Delta firefighters is intended to support the critical role of the BC Ambulance paramedics, rather than replace it. The EMR program is an excellent example of agencies working together for the benefit of local residents.
Feedback from the patients and the Delta community as a whole has been overwhelmingly positive. Mayor Lois E. Jackson & Delta Council would like to assure you that Delta is committed to continuing the EMR program and ensuring that our residents receive the most effective pre-hospital care possible.
“Our priority is to keep the residents of our community as safe as possible by providing world-class, quick response to critical situations. The Emergency Medical Responder Program has greatly improved the care we can provide to Delta citizens when they need it the most, further emphasizing Delta’s commitment to sustaining a safe community to live, work, and play.”
“The collaboration on the Emergency Responders Program is a phenomenal example of improving services to our community with little or no additional cost to tax payers. The hard work of everyone involved, as well as the exceptional professionalism of Delta Fire & Emergency Services, under the leadership of Fire Chief Dan Copeland, has made the implementation of this program a complete success."
“The Emergency Responder Program has added a new dimension to our work as firefighters, giving us an increased scope to protect and serve the citizens of Delta. We look forward to building upon the broad skill sets we’ve developed to further provide high-quality and efficient pre-hospital patient care in emergency situations.”
