Mayor Jackson’s Garden Contest for Kids
Now that summer is officially here, there isn’t any better way to experience the sunshine and warm weather than in the garden. Children and youth between the ages of five and 16 are invited to go outside this summer and put their green thumb to the test as part of Mayor Jackson’s Garden Contest for Kids. Simply tend your garden throughout the summer and between August 5 and September 12, submit a photo of your flourishing flowers or vegetables for your chance to win a fabulous prize. Learn more at Delta.ca/GardenContest.
North Delta Family Day
Mayor Lois E. Jackson extended her gratitude to everyone who attended Family Day at the North Delta Community Park and special thanks to the North Delta Lions Club for hosting. The parade and festival are hallmarks of summer in Delta, and it wouldn’t have been possible without all of the staff, volunteers, and attendees.
Tour de Delta
Tour de Delta, Delta’s premier cycling event, returns from July 8 through 10, 2016. Currently, we are looking for volunteers to help continue a tradition of success. Come work with a team dedicated to creating a fantastic event, meet new people, and experience the energy of a world class cycling competition. If you’re interested in volunteering as a road marshal, housing host, set-up specialist, or any number of other positions, visit TourdeDelta.ca. For more information, please email Michelle Hebein at firstname.lastname@example.org.
2016 UBCM Resolutions
Council endorsed a number of 2016 Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) resolutions for consideration at the 2016 Annual Convention in September. These resolutions include ‘Strengthening the Primary Care Home Network’ and ‘Investigate Standards for the Independent Investigations Office’. Council also endorsed its support for the City of Victoria ‘Legislation and Action for a Barrier-Free BC’ resolution. Staff is also reviewing the housing issue and will report back if additional resolutions are identified. View the staff report.
Point Roberts Gravel Mine
Council approved the authorization for Chief Administrative Officer, George V. Harvie, to submit comments to Whatcom County regarding the proposed Point Roberts Province Road Gravel Mine CUP2016-00007 project. Staff have reviewed the proposal and recommended a number of comments for submission to Whatcom County. These comments generally pertain to environmental, community, and traffic safety issues, including dust and noise control, the effect of 75 truck trips on border queues, truck safety, and protection from invasive species. Comments are to be submitted in advance of the June 28, 2016 deadline. View the staff report.
Performing Arts Centre Preliminary Design Contract Award
Council awarded John M. Bingham Architect Inc. & Michael Hill Architect Inc. DBA Bingham Hill Architects a contract for preliminary design of a new performing arts centre in North Delta. The existing Firehall Centre for the Arts requires significant maintenance investment to continue operating in its current state. The objective of the contract is to obtain a preliminary design and a construction cost estimate to replace the building with a state of the art centre. Sufficient funds exist within the Council contingency plan to cover the design work. View the staff report.
