MAYOR’S ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Victoria Day Hours of Operation

With the Victoria Day holiday taking place on May 23, 2016, the Municipal Hall will be closed, as well as the Firehall Centre for the Arts, Tsawwassen Arts Centre, the Delta Community Animal Shelter, and the Delta Seniors Recreation Centres. All other recreation facilities across Delta will remain open for regularly scheduled programs and rentals; however, the Customer Service Offices will be closed.

May Days

May Days returns to Ladner this spring for its 120th year. From May 27 through May 29, rides, free entertainment, a craft fair, and food vendors will take over Memorial Park for this annual family-friendly tradition. This year, the theme is “Ladner – Our Community of the Future”. Please note, the parade route will start at Bridge Street and continue onto 47 Avenue, finishing at Memorial Park. The May Days Parade starts at noon on Sunday, May 29. For more information about the festival, please visit LadnerMayDays.com.

National Tourism Week

From May 29 through June 4, Delta will be recognizing National Tourism Week. Tourism is an important part of our economy, and Delta is looking to continue the trend of promoting the municipality as an attractive destination for visitors and businesses. Furthermore, with the large amount of spring and summer events coming up, like the Tour de Delta, Concerts in the Park, the Luminary Festival, and many others, we are eager to show off our community to tourists through our exciting community events and natural beauty.

Delta Flood Protection Strategy Update (Adapting to Sea Level Rise)

Council received a presentation regarding Delta’s Flood Protection Strategy and approved support for a comprehensive long term flood protection strategy. This strategy would deal with long term sea level rise as a result of climate change and enhanced seismic requirements and would require Delta to implement updated policies, extensive geotechnical studies, and a comprehensive dike upgrading program. Delta Hospital, Community Mental Health and Substance Use Services Update

Council received an update on recent steps taken by Fraser Health to improve surgical services at Delta Hospital, as well as enhance mental health and substance use services throughout the community. The updates included a summary of Fraser Health’s investment in Mental Health and Substance Use initiatives including new Rapid Access Clinics in North and South Delta, the START Team, the new South Delta and Surrey-North Delta Child & Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Local Action Teams, new Integrated Transition of Care Team, new Assertive Community Treatment Team for Surrey-North Delta, Community Health Intervention Program, and the Weekly Drop-in Mental Health/Substance Use Support Program.
