UBC Thunderbirds Congratulations
Mayor Jackson offered congratulations to the UBC Thunderbirds Football team for having won the Vanier Cup on November 28. The championship squad included a number of Delta School District alumni – South Delta Secondary graduates David Mann, Chris Adams, Bryce Connors, and Riley Jones, Sands Secondary graduate Tony Ganton, and Seaquam Secondary graduate Ethan Sadowski.
Mayor Jackson and Delta Council gave thanks for the efforts made by the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Towers, and residents of Tsawwassen and Point Roberts in regards to the denied proposal for relocation of the BBC Broadcasting facility to Point Roberts. The proposal was denied on October 7 by the Skagit County Superior Court. BBC Broadcasting has decided to not appeal the decision. More information about the Radio Towers can be found at Delta.ca.

Delta Designated “Champion Supporter” of the Partnership for Water Sustainability
Council received a presentation by representatives of The Partnership of Water Sustainability in BC in which Delta was designated as a “Champion Supporter”. Delta was recognized for its support of The Partnership, in particular the Water Balance Model initiative and the Rain Garden program, the latter of which will be entering its tenth year in 2016.
Rain Gardens at Delta Schools
Council received a presentation from Deborah Jones of the Cougar Creek Streamkeepers regarding Rain Gardens at Delta Schools. A rain garden is any landscaping that receives, filters, and absorbs rainwater runoff from an impervious surface such as a roof or pavement. There are 23 Rain Gardens throughout North Delta to help facilitate the absorption of groundwater instead of directing runoff into the sewer systems. For information about how you can adopt your own rain garden, visit Delta.ca.
Delta Smoking Bylaw No. 7481, 2015
Council was provided with a first, second, and third reading of Delta Smoking Bylaw No. 7481, 2015, replacing the repealed Delta Smoking Regulation Bylaw No. 5891, 2001. This amendment provides wording that prohibits smoking in all of Delta’s parks and open spaces, contributes to and promotes a healthy, smoke-free society, and at the same time supports smoke free programs implemented by other adjacent communities. Residual Dredging Plan for Ladner Local Channels
Council approved the Residual Dredging Plan for Ladner Local Channels, as prepared by Port Metro Vancouver in consultation with Provincial and Delta Staff. Using funds remaining from the initial dredging in Ladner, the project will implement a strategy that targets specific areas of sediment accumulation for priority dredging until the funds are fully used. Letters to federal government Ministers and Delta MP Carla Qualtrough are to be sent, addressing the issue of long-term funding for maintenance dredging. View the Staff Report.
Expanded Service Hours – Sungod Recreation Centre and Ladner Leisure Centre
Council approved the extension of Saturday morning hours at Sungod Recreation Centre and Ladner Leisure Centre to 7 am, effective January 2, 2016. The extended hours are in response to patron demands and will be implemented with the intention of alleviating early morning congestion, providing a more fluid facility experience. Council approved the installation of public art, the formation of a working group, and the application for funding to the Canada 150 Fund. There are a number of funding streams available to communities across Canada in support of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.
