MAYOR'S ANNOUNCEMENTS


Delta Celebrates Hockey Day in Canada
Mayor Lois E. Jackson highlighted the success of Delta’s Hockey Day in Canada celebrations, including the grand re-opening of the Ladner Leisure Centre, a special tribute to the late Pat Quinn, and a full slate of hockey games and tournaments. View the news release.

Delta Development Workshop – Tuesday February 17 @ 4:00 pm
The Mayor noted a Delta Development Workshop will be held on February 17 at 4:00 pm in the Municipal Hall Council Chambers. Delta is hosting this workshop to demonstrate its new MyCity/e-Plan online portal, which will soon be available on our website. This new online portal will enable you to submit residential building permit drawings online, track the status of your building permit application and more!

At the Workshop, staff will also provide information on updates to the BC Building Code, access and egress for secondary suites, and Delta’s Zoning Bylaw Review, which is currently underway. SPECIAL PRESENTATION


Recognition of South Delta Rams Bantam Football Team
Mayor Jackson and Council recognized the South Delta Rams Bantam Football Team, who won the 2014 BC Community Football Association Bantam level Provincial Championship. Several of the 2015 Bantam team players will represent South Delta again at the upcoming Star Bowl this April.

The South Delta Rams generously presented Mayor Jackson with a glass plaque to the Corporation of Delta in thanks for Delta’s support of the Football Club. The plaque will be displayed in the Municipal Hall foyer case.

2015 Heritage Award Winners
In celebration of Heritage Week, which runs from February 16-22 in Delta, Mayor Jackson recognized the 2015 Heritage Award Winners: the Ladner United Church and its congregation, for their outstanding restoration of an important historical Delta landmark. The Heritage Advisory Commission awarded both the Heritage Award of Merit and the Friends of Heritage Award to the Ladner United Church congregation, recognizing both the quality of the restoration and the effort it took to accomplish this project.

Heritage Award of Merit Plaque Presentation

DELEGATIONS/PRESENTATIONS

 

Metro Vancouver Transportation & Transit Referendum
Mike Buda, Executive Director of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation presented information on the upcoming Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Referendum. From March 16 to May 29, 2015, residents and businesses in Metro Vancouver will receive a mail-in ballot from Elections BC to vote on a 0.5% increase to the Provincial Sales Tax.  

Mayor and Council seeking feedback on the upcoming Referendum
Mayor Jackson and Council are seeking public feedback on the upcoming Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Referendum and Delta’s transportation priorities. View the Mayor’s Message on the upcoming Referendum and for information on how to submit your feedback.

Staff will report back to Council on the feedback received from Delta residents and businesses regarding the Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Referendum at the March 30, 2015 Regular Meeting. View the staff report.

 

BYLAWS FOR FINAL ADOPTION

Bylaw Nos. 7229 and 7230 – Marina Garden Estates
Council gave final consideration and adoption to Bylaw Nos. 7229 and 7230, the Marina Garden Estates proposal for 580 townhouse units, 94 apartment units, neighbourhood commercial area with parking facilities, 250-boat marina and a linear waterfront park and relocated golf course amenities. 2015 Utility User Rates

Council gave final consideration and adoption to Bylaw Nos. 7398, 7399 and 7400, which set the utility user rates for water, sewer and solid waste (garbage and recycling). The flat rate utility bill for a single family home will increase by $22 from $960 to $982 in 2015. Delta’s proposed 2015 utility user rates remain one of the lowest in the region.  View the staff memorandum.

 

DISCUSSION REPORTS

Canada Post - Community Engagement Update
Council endorsed a recommendation that a letter be sent to Canada Post requesting that accessibility issues related to the new community mailboxes be accommodated by Canada Post. Upon receiving customer feedback, Canada Post is planning to install small clusters of new community mailboxes in Ladner that are located close to homes. Canada Post has also committed to making special arrangements for people with disabilities and for seniors with mobility challenges. Delta staff will work with Canada Post once Canada Post reaches the location planning stage of its process, to ensure chosen locations are safe and appropriate for Ladner residents. New Building Canada Fund - Delta Priority Projects
Council approved the submission of the following projects for consideration and funding approval under the Government of Canada’s New Building Fund:

  • 12th Avenue Storm Water Management Improvements
  • Sanitary Sewer Forcemain Twinning Project
  • 64th Avenue Reservoir and Pump Station Upgrade
  • Arthur Drive Road Improvements

The New Building Canada Fund grant is a three-way equal contribution from the federal, provincial and municipal governments. These priority projects are included in Delta’s capital plan. View the staff report.
