Delta Celebrates Hockey Day in Canada

Feb 16, 2015

Last Saturday February 14, Delta kicked off its Hockey Day in Canada celebrations with opening ceremonies at the newly renovated Ladner Leisure Centre. The Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, PC, QC, MP, Delta-Richmond East; Mayor Lois E. Jackson; Councillor Robert Campbell; CAO George V. Harvie; Ron Toigo, President of the Vancouver Giants; Randy Henderson, President of BC Hockey; Phil Picaud, Chair of Hockey Day in Canada; and Mrs. Sandra Quinn, were all on hand to partake in the opening ceremonies, which included a tribute to the late Pat Quinn.

“It is important we recognize the loss of a great man - Pat Quinn - one of hockey’s most respected players and coaches. As a part-owner of the Vancouver Giants, Pat was very involved in the development of hockey in our community and beyond. Pat’s dedication to the game of hockey was truly inspirational and will always be remembered,” said Mayor Lois E. Jackson.

As part of Delta’s Hockey Day in Canada events, a full slate of hockey games were held at the Ladner Leisure Centre, including a skills event with Kirk McLean and Ian Gallagher. Hockey celebrations also took place at Tilbury Ice, along with street hockey tournaments at the South Delta Recreation Centre. The Vancouver Canucks Alumni versus Delta Police evening hockey game at the Ladner Leisure Centre drew lots of crowds and entertainment.

Upgrades to the newly renovated Ladner Leisure Centre include a new score clock, upgrades to the interior and exterior of the arena, a new cycle fit studio, updated sound system and more! If you haven’t had a chance to check out renovations, visit the Ladner Leisure Centre webpage for facility hours.
