Passings in the Community
Mayor Lois E. Jackson recognized the recent passing of two long-time community volunteer members, Claudette Hayward and Linda Ottho. Mayor and Council extend their sincere condolences to the families and friends of Mrs. Hayward and Mrs. Ottho. 

Prime Minister's Announcement at Annacis Island
Mayor Lois E. Jackson attended the BCIT/Vancouver Community College Annacis Island campus last Thursday, January 8, where Prime Minister Stephen Harper made an important federal announcement regarding the Canada Apprentice Loan initiative; this initiative is now accepting applications and will provide apprentices in Red Seal trades across Canada with access to interest-free loans. 

Mayor Jackson expressed her excitement for the new program and emphasize the importance of our trades and technical industry, both nation-wide and locally in Delta. She noted the upcoming Delta Trades & Technical Career Fair on Thursday, April 30, 2015, and encouraged people of all ages to attend and explore opportunities offered, especially with the new incentive to pursue a career in trades. 

Canada's National Junior Hockey Team Wins Gold Medal
On behalf of Council, Mayor Jackson congratulated Canada's National Junior Hockey Team for winning gold at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship. She particularly recognized Delta's own Nic Petan, for playing an integral role in Team Canada's victory, and Tristan Jarry, for participating in the 2015 Development Camp. Delta is so proud of both amazing athletes!

Delta Fire Website
DeltaFire.ca has been upgraded to the Corporation of Delta website's look and feel. It can still be accessed through DeltaFire.ca, but is also available under Your Government at Delta.ca. Please visit the new site for all of your fire safety and Delta Fire information needs. 

Advisory Committee Volunteers
Mayor Jackson and Council are seeking volunteers for Delta Advisory Committees. If you are interested in volunteering and participating in your local government, please review committee volunteer opportunities and apply to the Office of the Municipal Clerk by January 31, 2015. The commitment is a one-year term starting March 1, 2015.

2015 Heritage Week
Council approved 2015 Heritage Week activities including the annual awarding of the Heritage Award of Merit and Friends of Heritage awards, and the Heritage Commission Scholarship. This year's Heritage Week is February 16–22, 2015. Activity and event details will be communicated in the coming weeks. View the staff report.

Hockey Day in Canada
Council received an overview of the upcoming Hockey Day in Canada event from Ken Kuntz, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture. The event is on Saturday, February 14, 2015, and will coincide with the grand re-opening of the Ladner Leisure Centre. View the staff report. 

DISCUSSION REPORTS


Community Consultation and Engagement
Council approved staff recommendations to pursue community consultation and engagement initiatives in 2015, including a series of Delta Municipal Services Open Houses. View the staff report. 

Gibson Elementary School Crosswalk
Council approved the recommendation that a raised pedestrian crosswalk be constructed on 90 Avenue closer to the front entrance of Gibson Elementary SChool to enhance student safety. View the staff report.
