Note to Election Candidates
Mayor Jackson made the following statement regarding campaigning for the November 15, 2014 Local Government Election:

It has come to my attention that one of the Council candidates in our upcoming local government election is publicly encouraging disruptions to municipal hall staff for futile reasons.

At a recent October 23 Council all candidates meeting, a candidate challenged the public to call Delta Municipal Hall multiple times with the same request, in an effort to find and expose inconsistencies. Specifically, the candidate made the following statement:

"I would challenge each one of you to phone city hall and ask one question, ask it three times, and see if you get the same answer, chances are you won't..."

This challenge has also been posted and shared on social media.

While I fully support a competitive, lively, election campaign, I do not support challenges that don't serve an immediate purpose and that come at the expense of staff time and taxpayer money.

I want to add that Delta staff is here to assist the public and answer any questions they may have – that is our duty as your local government. I am simply requesting that candidates not involve our staff as part of an election campaign challenge.

Individuals have every right to use print, radio, television, and the Internet and social media advertising to promote or oppose candidates, but I would ask that this process occurs free from involvement of municipal staff; there is no need for unnecessary interruptions to daily business at municipal hall for the sake of a campaign strategy. So let's please try to respect the election process. – Mayor Lois E. Jackson

DISCUSSION REPORTS

Delta's Green Growth Index
Council received a report on the success of the Green Growth Index, a document created to encourage and guide sustainable development. Based on feedback from applicants and staff who have worked with the Green Growth Index, the report recommends modifications that would continue to encourage sustainable development. The changes suggested include revising wording and formatting of the document and allowing it to be completed online. View the staff report.

10-Year Transportation Plan
Council received a report on the current public engagement process initiated by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to assist in developing their next 10-year transporation plan (to be released in early 2015). The Province has released a discussion guide titled B.C. on the Move: A 10-Year Transportation Plan, which sets out a series of short-, medium- and long-term priorities. Staff has identified a number of priority items for Delta, which will be sent to the provincial government in response to their request for input. View the staff report.
