Roadside ditches and swales occurring in Delta provide storm water
drainage and lead to creeks untreated. During heavy rain storms ditches fill up and slowly drain reducing the flow of water on its way to the creek. When the weather is dry, the swale is empty and grass and other plants grow.
By holding the water temporarily in a swale, it allows some water to soak into the ground and some to evaporate. Swales reduce the flow and volume of storm water entering into creeks and the Fraser River. Reducing the flow and volume of storm water water helps prevent sudden changes in water levels and reduces erosion of creek banks. The filtering of water through the ground also helps to remove any contaminants.
